Located just south of the equator, Tanzania is the largest an East African country: area 945,087 sq km (364,900 sq miles); it includes the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia. Tanzania is bordered by the Indian Ocean and countries – Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. Official name: United Republic of Tanzania (Swahili: Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania).Tanzania’s national and political capital is  Dodoma (before Dar Es Salaam). Tanzania has a varying climate depending on location. Other than the highlands and mountainous areas, temperatures rarely fall below 68 degrees F (20 degrees C). However, the climate is tropical and there are generally two rainy seasons the longer being March through May and the short between October and November. Tanzania’s population includes around 120 different African tribal groups. A range of different religions are followed across Tanzania; major are Christianity and Islam. Tanzania has a number of important national parks and nature reserves.

The currency of Tanzania is Tanzanian shilling. Exchange rates vary and are subject to change anytime. Almost everywhere in Tanzania are also accepted US Dollars. Although please note that your US dollars must be dated at least 2006 or newer. Credit cards such as  American Express, Master Card, Access and Visa are accepted by large hotels and restaurants. However, many will impose a fee of up to 5% for using a credit card. Smaller merchants and street vendors do not accept credit cards. ATMs are not very plentiful in Tanzania so we suggest that you bring all the cash that you think you may need. Do not rely on being able to find an ATM while you are in Tanzania.

The time zone is GMT + 3. It doesn’t operate daylight saving time, hence there’s no time difference between their summer and winter months. The power plugs and sockets are of type D and G. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. In Tanzania is left-hand traffic. Tanzania is a tropical country and vaccines are sensible (typhoid, polio, tetanus and yellow fever). Malaria is common and occurs all year round; you must take anti-malarial measures, especially in areas below 1500m. Always check the latest recommendations with your clinic or doctor.

Tanzania has two international airports, one outside the commercial capital Dar es Salaam (airport code: DAR) and the other near Arusha (and Mount Kilimanjaro) and Kilimanjaro International Airport (airport code: JRO). Charter flights and some international operators fly directly to Zanzibar Island (airport code: ZNZ). Coming to Tanzania has been made easy for visitors.
